Relatively large, long-billed, and long winged. Clean pale breast and throat, very pale malar, thin but distinct and complete eyering.

According to "The Sibley guide to birds" (2nd ediion - page 339)
Pewees are distinguished from all Empidonax flycatchers by longer wings, long primary projection, and relatively short legs; also by dark face with weak partial eyering, dusky "vest.", and grayish smudges on undertail coverts.
